One of the truly great things about blogs is that they are a means of self-expression. In a world where it can be difficult to be heard, they provide a convenient way of airing your opinions and broadcasting your ideas. There is nothing more rewarding than blogging about your passions and interests. It is also a brilliant way to enter the world of writing.

There are only two components to a blog that cost you: your domain name and web hosting fees. For as little as EUR10 a month you can have your blog up and running. There are even websites that provide free hosting and domain names, thereby, costing you nothing. Although I would recommend that you pay for both hosting and having your own domain name, as in the long run it is much more beneficial.

Blogs can be used to target niche markets. You can target a certain niche that is generating a lot of interest and write product reviews on your blog. You can then earn money through affiliate marketing by sending interested readers to product vendors.
  1. 6
You can also generate a lot of traffic through your blog with relatively little effort thanks to great support structures in place for blog users. The above are just some of many reasons why you should have your own blog up and running.

Teaching well is an art rooted in practical behavioral science. There are definitely techniques that have been proven to work better than the typical "stand and deliver" lecture of information. Here's how you can help facilitate significant, long-term learning with integrated course design.

Analyze your teaching situation. Consider your students and whatever you already know (or can guess) about them. Consider the expectations of the organization that has brought you in to teach. What are your minimum requirements?

  1. Identify your Learning Goals. Ideally, what would you like the students to remember and/or do from your class a year later? Ideally, how do you want this class to leave a lasting effect on their lives?
  2. 3
Identify your feedback and assessment options. Whether you have to grade the class or not, how will you know whether the students have achieved the Learning Goals? One option: Educative Evaluation (vs. Auditive) where you ask students to imagine a specific future situation related to what you've been teaching about, and ask them how they would respond to the situation. This helps students personalize (and retain) what they've been learning about. The more immediately you can give the students feedback on whether they're "getting it" or not, the more quickly their brains will retain the learning. Tests are the most common assessments in graded classes; one way to make a multiple-choice test more of a learning activity instead of just an audit is to give them immediate feedback as they take the test, perhaps by using something like the Epstein IFAT test form.
  3. 4
Choose Learning Activities. Based on your situation, learning goals and feedback & assessment options, what activities will help students experimentally learn what you want them to? Active learning (here students participate in some sort of way) has been proven to be more effective than passive learning (e.g. listening only to a lecture or presentation). One simple way to add active learning to a lecture is to include "Think, Pair, Share" moments after every chunk of conceptual information (7-15 minutes max).
  4. 5
Check for Integration. After pulling together the learning activities and assessment techniques, check to see if they integrate to effectively facilitate the learning goals with the kinds of students you will have. Consider checking with someone else, perhaps beta-testing activities you haven't tried before, so that you can improve on the clarity of the instructions.
  5. 6
Get Student Feedback. Don't wait for a generic course evaluation at the end! Check with students frequently during the course to get feedback on what is working well and what could be improved, either immediately or the next time you teach. One way, if you are teaching in a graded attendance-required class, is to have students complete a simple half-sheet evaluation each day, asking 1) what are your take aways" today? 2) what could have been better today? How? 3) what grade would you give this session (on a scale of 1 to 5).
  6. 7
Keep Learning More About How To Teach! No matter how good you are, you can continue improving. Stay open to new ideas, and look for opportunities to learn from others. What works and what doesn't. Just because an activity doesn't work smoothly the first time does not mean it won't work - many times they just need refining. TIPS

  • Master classroom management, i.e.: keep students busy as much as possible doing thinking exercises e.g. have students write the questions for the quiz this week.
    • If given a roaming/floating class schedule, that is your cue to organize your materials and make friends with the teachers where you are each period, so you have some storage space in each room, if possible. Make that room-teacher welcome to remain there during your class and work in there (be professional, not too angry or confused).
  Warnings-Teacher
  • Protect your possessions -- keys, wallet, cell-phone,...
  • You might be recorded, use words carefully (see below)
  • Be very careful with giving out phone numbers and email addresses.
  • Some places in the US are quick to sue teachers
    • Teacher associations/unions help with million dollar liability insurance and legal representation.
 Warnings-students
  • Teachers burn out and can become less than effective in the classroom
  • Student responsibility "some are more equal than others"

 Warnings-administration
  • Understand the rules under which the administration are operating
  • If given a roaming class schedule, that is your cue to exit the school

5 Tips For Hosting On line Class Discussions

Class discussions that can occur any time of day and students engaged in that discussion. It took me a while to get my head around ‘online’ discussion and I used the experience of other teachers in my school who’d tried it. I currently use this with my Independent Directed Study students (Japanese language) and will be expanding it to my Year 4 students next year. What to consider? Here’s a few of my thoughts:
Platform

A secure program such as Edmodo or Schoology . My key is that it comes with a free mobile app and is a secure environment. Students enjoy the ability to contribute via mobiles but I ensure that computer access is also available for those without smart phones. I am not at the point comfortable using social media for this. With regard to Twitter, I don’t feel comfortable asking students to join, for the purpose of a course, something that opens them up to outside ‘spam’ followers. Facebook I also avoid as I want to maintain a clear and professional distance from my students. For me the link between their personal Facebook, and my role as their teacher should be separate.
Topic

For me the point is to have them interacting and sharing ideas. Thus a topic that is reachable with the language that they know and just ‘controversial’ enough to court opinion. In the past we have touched on ideas such as “It’s a good idea for a high school student to have a part-time job” to “Students should take a mandatory year off between high school and post-secondary school.”
Group Size

To ensure a robust discussion I like to do this not as a ‘whole’ class but rather in smaller sub-groups. I like the ‘small group’ options that Edmodo and Schoology offer so that my class of 30 can be comfortable discussing among a smaller group of 8-9. As a tip – don’t forget to include yourself in the group so that you can see their posts!
Rules

In order to ensure that students are engaged the ‘discussion’ occurs over more than 1 day – and is done in two parts. Typically I allow 4 days for on-line discussion. It starts at 7:45 on the first day and students have until midnight of Day 2 to post 1 comment stating their personal view and 1 specific response to a classmate’s comments. If a student does NOT do that then they are locked out of part 2 of the discussion and can only generate a maximum of 1 out of 5 marks for the exercise. Once they have completed part 1 – then in part 2 they are asked to extend the discussion by contributing at least 5 more posts including 2 specific references to another person. Naturally the students are aware that our district code of conduct applies – and failure that adhere to that not only removes them from the discussion but will include further school-based discipline.
Marking

I am not marking for ‘grammar’ or other technical parts but rather am looking for opinion – and the ability to quality of thought behind their responses.
5 POINTS - Excellent. Insightful and reflective discussion contributions; expands upon ideas presented in discussion; Multiple contributions to the discussion; language reflects concepts studied
3 POINTS - Acceptable. Elaboration and contribution to one or two ideas within the discussion; Participated in both halves of the discussion to the minimum amount; language mostly reflects concepts studied.
1 POINT - Marginal. Simple insight or contribution to the topic; only participated in Part 1 of the discussion.

I sourced the ideas for the rubric from Rizopoulos, L.A., & McCarthy, P. (2009). Using Online threaded discussions: best practice for the digital learner. Journal of Educational Technology Systems.

It’s rewarding to see my students defending their ‘ideas’ in a second language – and some of the best ‘authentic’ interaction out there! What’s your experience with the on-line discussion world?
